Assignment 1: After having looked over this website, go to your blog and respond to the following questions:
* Did you find the CoSN website useful?
Yes I think the CoSN website is useful. It looks like there is a lot of good information on the website. I looked at the Master the Moment tab which seems very useful for my school district, and many school districts current situations. How do we do more with less? That is the big questions. Many school districts have tighter budgets but still need to be moving forward with technology, especially when curriculum is online and testing is online schools need to be ‘with it’ when it comes to technology. Not only that but our students love technology and live every moment with it so why wouldn’t we be using it to teach our studetns. The website looked like it would have some good suggestions for how districts can assess costs for supplying/maintaining technology and potential ways to weed out costs and be more cost efficient.
* What information on the website was most useful to you? The most useful would be using the tab I mentioned above to see how our district could be doing more with less money. To assess how much it will cost to get and maintain technology and ask see where we could maybe cut out some costs. I’m sure for many districts this is a big concern. How we can stay competitive with technology, give the kids what they need, and still work within a budget. Another thing I thought was useful on the website was just reading more about their strategic plan and what they would like to do in years to come. I can’t believe they have been around for 20 years and I haven’t heard about it. I liked reading what their goals were. They seem very dedicated to bringing technology into schools and getting it in the hands of students.
* How will information from this website help your Technology Committee? It just seems like there is a lot of information on the website that would be useful to our technology committee. I also like that all the answers are right there in one place. Sometimes websites will bounce you from place to place but everything you would need access to is right there on the website and easy to navigate. All of the leadership initiatives I think would be of great interest to our technology committee. I liked the leadership for mobile learning. How can we use mobile learning devices as an effective tool for teaching and learning? What an awesome idea! Instead of the technology being the enemy let’s use it for good! All of the leadership initiatives looked like they would be beneficial for the technology committee.
* What implications does this information have for technology planning in your school? I think there are a lot of staff members who do not like using new technology and to hear how great some of it would be to use in the classroom, like mobile learning devices, is something they would not like to hear. But like with any change people are going to buck at first until they are used to it. How awesome would it be though to be using technology in our buildings to its fullest potential? We would be effectively teaching materials with things they are interested in and it would really making learning fun for our students.
